A Bit Different…

Here’s one a bit different than the others.

Bible verse of the day is Psalm 104:1

Some fun added-track action that I didn’t think I’d take the time for, but did as I provide a work situation update; some thoughts on segues, as compared to EGC; segmentation and even more meta chat about podcasting; why I’m in the car on a Saturday; “what’s happening at my church” update, including a clip from a great teaching on church prophecy available from the FCF website; and then I start to wrap it up but then need to talk about the Wii I don’t have, and respond to one more item of feedback.

A Quick One On The Way Home

Bible verse of the day is John 3:16 - paraphrased :)

An amusing way to while away the miles (hopefully you’re amused too); a poor driving story, and why I didn’t record this on the way to work; some discussion about the basic rules of the road; the high cost of gas just got higher (in Oregon, $3.12 on average, yikes); reminiscing about how I learned about the right of way; current news, and my feelings; my shrinking audience; reconnected with my little sister, yay.

[I came home all fired up to get some stuff done, and pumped out an episode! Now I better focus and do that other stuff..]

Given with Cheer

Bible verse of the day is 2 Corinthians 9:6.

The next thing at our church will be an experience around generous giving; one great reason I’d like to work for myself; not recording a grumbling podcast; more comments regarding credit cards, this time about a recent episode of Fresh Air those calls you get where they ask about recent charges on the card (and BTW I certainly don’t mean to suggest we don’t need to watch the statements); I chopped out some further rambles about credit cards, but am leaving in a thought about being an entrepreneur and salesman; weight loss update — more than 40 pounds baby; chemtrails, and the recent Eject! Eject! Eject! essay; why a Chevy Volt wouldn’t work for me (thought sparked by a Science Friday podcast); parkour or freerunning, check out The Real Spiderman video; a couple shout-outs and it’s a wrap.

[Wow it was Sunday before I could get this out. Doh!]

Hard Times Roadtrip

Bible verse of the day is Psalm 118:22.

Wherein Rob tells some stories of hard times, cautionary tales and experiences… and even records a bonus feature along these lines which happened while the show was in progress! First, a bit of the show he mentioned last time, Secret History of the Credit Card, a discussion of minimum monthly payment disclosure and a few words from Andrew Kahr; a discussion of a (very) recent traffic citation; tells the story of the last time he spoke to the judge about a citation; events of the day (to which I was indeed late, and while I was telling what was happening… yet another incident!); the impact of changing the timing of Daylight Saving Time; and wrap it up.

For variety I skipped the usual music but instead used Supasonic from Stargarden’s Music for Modern Listening as a soundbed.

Comment Spam Filtering update

I haven’t looked at my access logs but my audience has seemed to have fallen away as I did not publish an episode for a few weeks. Either that or there’s a bug in the Askimet comment spam filter (and I highly doubt that). Oh and I suppose I might have broken the features when I installed the new template but again, that’s not likely.

Mostly wanted to post here to say I’ve got protection against the onerous part of having comments, stupid spammers trying to hock their wares. Askimet is doing a great job so far… today I had to hand-delete the first entry since I installed it, and it caught 24 without my doing anything at all. I wish my email spam filters were as good!

Not driving this week so no show again… though I do have an idea for a mini-ep I might goof with this weekend. Or something.

Back in the Saddle

[Happy 2007 everybody! A new theme and a new show for a new year, yay]

The bible verse of the day is Psalms 118:24.

Wherein Rob returns to the airwaves with (seemingly) obligatory comments about not recording for awhile, and how awkward it feels to be publishing this show again; a few comments about Frontline, their show Secret History of the Credit Card, and of the Eight Things a Credit Card User Should Know, a few words about Universal Default; follow-up on my recent surgery; how I learned about my new car’s Electronic Stabilization Program (or is it Electromechanical Power Steering) feature (and the importance of reading the manual that comes with the car); a few words about the hot Christmas present that I didn’t get for myself (yet).

No show this week, instead you get a blog entry…

I didn’t have much to say that wasn’t about podcast production… so I didn’t record on Wed or Thurs, so no editing task on Friday nor show for you this week. I might have one soon, meanwhile:

I wonder if anyone uses WinAmp? Kyle sends this clue about one way to do segmentation, and I think WinAmp is available on all platforms. Interesting?

Way Off the Beaten Track…

Numbers 6:24-26 is my bible verse of the day.

Upgraded my recording studio! A lovely 2003 Volkswagon Passat [and yes I’ll keep tuning on the mic levels]; going to OryCon; what happened to the last edition; my experiences with podcast production thus far; why there was no intro music on this ep (darn, can’t find the link to the interesting conversation about it, oh well let’s start our own, anyone?); KMarie and Trev left the country; what’s _really_ been going on with me; smoking update, and how I’m not ready to quit even though I don’t smoke in my new car; addictions, and Requiem for a Dream and Motherlode (which plays fullscreen here) and [sure, let’s talk about addictions, I’m not happy about mine so I hope that’s clear]; Dr. Bart cracking me up about cassette tapes; song of the podcast, Nitro Dub by Stargarden from their Ambient Excursions and courtesy Magnatune; thanks to Artdog for helping me retrieve my car, and why I like the ambient downbeat; and the end.

There are 13 segments in this very special episode… and to further expand the experiment [and let me tell you, the back-assward way I did this cost me a lot of time and significantly delayed the publication] I’m publishing each segment as a separate file. We’ll see how satisfactory it is. I won’t put this in the enclosure feed as I don’t think there’s any automation yet anywhere to handle this. Let me know BART what you think :)

[Next time, I’m committed to clearing the publishing queue a lot faster… this has sat for 10 days, grr, sorry]

Slow Baked

[A delicious episode, slow baked and aged with an old-world flair. Or something like that, it just took me a long time to get it done. Oh well, I’ve got another in the can (aging now, doh) and speak there to what happened, so here we go…]

Proverbs 30:8 is my bible verse of the day.

Wherein Rob talks about progress on the workflow [which isn’t what set me back on production] of production, mentions podcaster Garrick Van Buren and his generous sharing of his HijackingWP Script and alternatives; more on segmentation and soundbeds and the desire to fast-forward per-segment; breaks a rule about not talking about current events, to talk about a trend evidenced by a recent event [which sure enough has now aged more than a week before anyone hears it], that being bait-and-switch ballot measures; driver’s education and a desire for excellence, like learning to leave ample huge extra distance when following on a 2-lane highway where you’re not going to pass; shout out to Neal and an extra segment just to be sure he doesn’t say this is an anemic sad little cookie, a second-day ramble and a story about a rumor of a scam happening in the office where I work ala The Game or that episode of Everybody Loves Raymond; Sunrey from Music for Modern Listening by Stargarden [which held production until I could retrieve the .wav version and not double-compress the MP3, which is NO GOOD and totally not required with Magnatune’s excellent offer for podcasters].

[Huh another recording with at least a bit of “drop-out” issues on the source recording. I don’t know what’s going on, my recorder didn’t used to do that but it’s twice in a row I’m hearing this issue. Grr. Also I had grand plans to soundbed a portion of this show but… not this time! Instead I had grand plans to put out segment files and see how satisfactory the idea might be… and needing to do that with no automation _definitely_ slowed me down producing the show. Plus, well I’ll just claim to be busy though that’s not the whole truth of why I’m behind on the podcast… look at me ramble here! Another idea I’ve not explored, reading back the paragraph of show notes that I’m laboriously creating with every ep… sigh, lots of goals and things to do with this podcast fun. I hope you enjoy.]

Brought to you by the letter S

Bible verse (verses!) of the day: Proverbs 27:6 and Proverbs 28:20.

Wherein Rob responds to feedback and finds bible verses to help him do so; almost violates his rule about never reading while driving; pre-announces a portion of the next podcast (another rule violation, oof); Soundbed; Segmentation; Studio S; Surgery; Songs (and I wish I would have said more good things about Curl’s Inner because I’ve now listened to it a couple times and like it more than I say in the show).

Mad props to my podcast hero Leisa for turning me on to Magnatune (and I’ll go ahead and copy her idea to go out with a song, since we all know imitation is the sincerest form of flattery).

[I think this might just work! Give it a listen, if it seems decent I’ll try segmenting this way again. Also while I’m posting meta-comments, at 12:38 or so you’ll hear a dropout in the recording… I went back to the source media and for some reason it just didn’t record! no idea why it failed]
